There is wide evidence of the need for palliative care. However, there are few randomised controlled trials on the effectiveness of such complex interventions. Dr. Bakitas was co-investigator and director of the Project ENABLE (Educate, Nurture, Advise, Before, Life, Ends), which included a series of studies and led to the creation of a Palliative Care Consultation Service in a US Cancer Centre. A new intervention (nurse-led, psycho-educational) was evaluated in a randomised controlled trial (RCT), published last year in JAMA.
