The International Access, Rights and Empowerment study (The IARE study)

The IARE study wants to better understand the needs of patients aged 65 and over who have received palliative care for cancer and non-cancer conditions, and their families. This knowledge will be used to help improve access to these valuable services for this group.
Where is the study taking place?
The IARE study, which is part of the BuildCARE project, is an international study and is being carried out in three different cities where palliative care is given differently. All of these cities have ageing populations that will pose challenges to the healthcare system in the future. These cities are:
London – King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals
New York City – Mt Sinai Medical Center
Dublin – Beaumont Hospital, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
Aims of our study
In each city the study is split into 3 groups of work so that we can gain a full picture of people’s experiences and needs:
Group 1 – aims to find out more about who gets palliative care, what their needs are and what they would like, and what does and doesn’t help with accessing palliative care. To find out more
Group 2 – aims to find out what helps and what blocks access to specialist palliative care. We also wish to find out what helps empower patients receiving palliative care. To find out more
Group 3 – aims to help improve services for patients and to better support carers before and after the death of their relative or friend. To find out more
To hospital clinicians, GPs and local care services
